After spending most of my career as a senior manager in the high-tech telecommunications world I found myself laid off in my mid-50s at the very beginning of the financial meltdown in 2008. Needless to say career prospects were not bright. Like many people my age this was a terrifying moment.
As a long-time hiring manager I knew what to expect. I realize that it was time to reinvent myself, and that’s exactly what I did.I created an online version of an Outlook time management training program (that’s another story) and in the process learned all about WordPress, PHP, HTML and CSS. It was a gas.
Through this experience I invested in some formal training and became a certified WishList Member developer. I began creating similar “membership” websites for coaches, consultants, trainers, authors and other professionals around the world.In the process I began to see that these professionals needed help marketing their websites and began to draw from my own experiences to help them. But I knew there was a better way began to search for solutions. I soon found that HubSpot shared my content marketing philosophy and became a member of their certified partner program. This has taken our business as well as our clients’ to a new level.
This business is challenging because the technology moves so quickly. I spend almost as much time keeping up changes as I do with serving clients. But as a geek I love it.
I love the work and the feeling of accomplishment I get for helping somebody take their business to another level. Many of our clients come to us having no experience of being in business for themselves. In addition to providing technology and marketing services I also find myself teaching people about the nuts and bolts of the professional services business. It’s a scary and exciting time and being to be a part of their experience.
On a good day I have a clear sense having moved the ball forward for somebody. By the end of those days I have more energy than when I started. It’s exciting.
